Maui based wedding photographer, Amity Mason, was recently featured in the Summer/Fall 2010 edition of Pacific Weddings magazine. Her dramatic photo of a real wedding couple was taken among the black lava fields in Makena, Maui. The moody lighting and rugged landscape give the image a surreal, dreamy effect. And newlyweds who could possibly be models in real life help, too. Congratulations, Amity!
Can you share a photo that reflects your work? What’s the story behind this photo?
This image reflects my artistic and candid nature. It is a natural moment of a bride and groom exiting a church in Makawao, while the guests who await shower them with bubbles. The artistic element here is my use of the tilt as well as capturing the bubbles in the foreground—some of them almost landing on the lens. This image gives the viewer a personal perspective, as if they were actually there.
What was it that lit your photography spark?
It was the culmination of many events that led to my interest in becoming a visual artist…in essence, a photographer. Read More

Growing up and looking at these images, I felt I was able to see through his eyes and understand who he was as a man. Because of this personal relationship I had with him through these images, I felt a close connection with photography, and the power it had to connect people. Read More
