These engagement photos of Adiel and Corey were shot at the ruins of the old Maui High School, Maui’s sugar cane fields and at the stunning stretch of beach at Ho’okipa.  This adorable couple began their love affair as coworkers, became friends and eventually fell in love. Adiel says Corey was her “rock” in establishing her business, the new and very popular Salon 253 in Wailuku town, of which she is a co-owner. She specializes in hair and makeup for weddings and loves talking with her brides about ideas for her own big day. Corey and Adiel are planning a wedding at a private estate on Maui’s North Shore. Congratulations!

What makes your photography different?

Everyone’s photography is different — or at least it should be, because we are all different. I love color (although I love black and white just as much), I love to be creative, and most of all, I love to have fun. I think my photography reflects this. Because I love color so much, I shoot film. I used to shoot digital but all the work I was drawn to ended up being shot on film. So I switched and I have never been happier.

The reason I shoot film is easy to answer: the colors. The look of film. The satisfaction I get from shooting film. The challenge and skill required to shoot film. Film is the reason I love photography. And the reason clients love my photographs.

Would you describe your photographs has having a special style?

If I had to name a style, I would say Fine Art. My images are definitely artistic and creative. And because my colors are true colors (i.e. blue skies not washed out yellow skies), my images will never become passé. After 50 years, the couples will still love their album and be able to relive their day.

Do you have any favorite places that you love to shoot?

I love just about anywhere in Hawaii, but somewhere new is always fun and exciting. I think you can compose a terrific photo shoot walking down the street or standing on a beach. It’s about seeing what is around you and being creative with what you find.

Who or what inspires your work?

My work is inspired by color, patterns, and composition. I love to look at both fashion and surf magazines for inspiration — sort of a surfer girl a la Vogue mentality.

Do you have a favorite moment when you shoot a wedding?

I’m not sure I have just one favorite moment. I really love the kiss and moments just after the ceremony when everyone is happy and a bit more relaxed. I especially love the time together with just the bride and groom.

Can you share a photo or two that reflects your work? What’s the story behind these photos?

These photos show my style. Lots of color, a bit of quirkiness, and everyone having a really fun time. I love having some time to do creative posing with the bride and groom. The one shot with the very saturated color was shot on my holga. I like to incorporate a bit of toy camera or Polaroid work into all of my shoots. I always bring my Polaroid to the wedding reception and give away the Polaroids. Everyone loves it and has a good time. I can make scans of the negatives I keep to include in the couple’s album.

What advice can you give couples when they are looking for a photographer for their wedding day?

My best advice is to look at the several portfolios and pick the one photographer whose images make you happy or touch you in some way. It’s a bit like picking a best friend for a day.

Things that make your heart happy…

My children, rainbows, film, creating, popsicles, stripes, smiles, the ocean and cherries.

When Jianbin and Tingran first visited the island of Maui, they knew they would host their own celebration of love in the tropics. The grad school students met through a mutual friend and quickly found themselves falling in love.

For their wedding in Hawaii, they selected the Hotel Wailea on the southwest shore of Maui. The secluded and peaceful location was perfect. Just down the hill from their hotel, a private beach awaited the sweet couple. Photographer Karma Hill took advantage of the natural splendor, capturing Jianbin and Tingram against the lush green backdrop. “We practically had the entire beach to ourselves on that beautiful summer evening,” she says.

Maui residents James and Marli spend more time than most people around the water. James is a scuba instructor, and Marli simply loves being outdoors in the sun and surf. But for their engagement photos, they opted to step out of their daily routine to explore Maui’s inland beauty. When they contacted lensman Bill Geoghegan about doing a shoot somewhere along the Hana Highway he was doubly excited—both for the adventure and for the fun of working with this friendly, easygoing couple. Together they zeroed in on Twin Falls as the perfect spot to relax with the camera.

A popular patch of jungle, Twin Falls seems to have been created to indulge photographers. Trails winding through the property pass through a sublime landscape of tropical foliage: palms, banana trees, ti leaf and ginger plants, guava and immense stands of bamboo that lead to tumbling waterfalls. Along every path are picture-perfect spots. According to Bill, “Once we got started with the engagement session it was hard to stop. Before we left we had spent several happy hours taking pictures and exploring.”

Jonathan and Rebecca, how did you become interested in photography?

Rebecca actually went to school for graphic design and, somewhere in the midst of that, began to fall in love with photography. We’ve both always loved having multiple outlets to be artistic, but the merging of photography and design is unlike any art we’ve ever known. That must be why we find it so captivating!

What’s the best part of being a photographer?

To actually be chosen as a crucial element in capturing and documenting someone’s love story is such an honor. To harness that love in the form of a picture, is unbelievably satisfying.

Would you describe your photographs as having a special style?

Through our imagery, we strive to unveil romance. However, we do so with a modern vintage approach infusing color and fashion with timeless simplicity.

Who or what inspires your work?

We find so much of our inspiration in beauty. Whether that beauty is expressed through nature, architecture, fashion or other art forms, we recognize it for what it is. God’s creation is so irreversibly stunning, we hardly go anywhere without feeling inspired!

What advice can you give couples when they are looking for a photographer for their wedding day?

We always recommend that the couple first lists out several descriptive words that best define the feelings they hope to communicate through their celebration. Once they have determined their own “style” they can find a photographer who best suits them. A photographer should fit your wedding day like a glove. There are so many styles and different perspectives out there, you are bound to find your perfect match.

Your latest obsession?

We absolutely love Pinterest, because it allows for the notion that inspiration is infinite—and highly addictive.

Something you will likely never change?

Our business name. Tamiz is Rebecca’s Indian middle name given by her grandma. We find it quite a fitting name for our business and an expression of who we are.

The Westin in Kaanapali set a tropical scene for the wedding of Nicole and Todd. The bride wore a classically styled gown and tiara, with bridesmaids and attendants in formal black and white. Kalani Wong officiated the outdoor ceremony with a backdrop of waterfalls in the  resort’s Aloha Pavilion. Three hundred friends and family members gathered to celebrate this glamorous Hawaii wedding, with a traditional lei exchange followed by a fabulous reception at the Westin Resort in Maui.

Roger and Laura met in 2005 while backpacking in Australia, and after seeing each other only twice, they knew there was a connection. Laura returned to Canada and Roger to his home in England, but the two kept in touch throughout the year. Their relationship was able to flourish when Laura moved to London a year later. Fast forward three years when Roger proposed. And since they met in paradise, they decided to be married in paradise. This Hawaiian-style wedding was intimate, romantic, and a fun getaway for family and friends. Best wishes Laura and Roger!
