Growing up in Hawaii I never took for granted.  I witnessed the ever changing beauty that blew through the islands and simply wanted to share it.  Now I get to!  Capturing people’s most happy & intimate moments amongst all the colors and textures Hawaii has to offer, is like a dream come true.

Heavenly Hana is Maui’s most secluded retreat!  To some, the journey to Hana is as magical as the destination itself, a winding road replete with switchback curves, waterfalls and cinematic ocean vistas. This quiet little town on Maui’s east coast is nestled within a tropical rainforest surrounded by lush vegetation and towering bamboo, and gorgeous beaches with sand varying from white to red to black. Hana is a photographer’s dream. Photographer Aubrey Hord recently spent the day with newlyweds, Nina and Kiva, creating these beautiful photos. She captured the vivacious and adventuresome personalities of this cute pair, who seemed to be anything but shy before the camera.  And with backdrops straight from heaven, this Maui wedding shoot is a true success!

I’m Mariah, a Maui photographer who has been photographing weddings since 2002. I am inspired by everything vintage, by color, by light, and mostly by love. I am a barefoot kind of gal. I love the beach, the mountains, and the salt air. I’m crazy in love with Maui – my island home and can’t wait to share my favorite spots with you.

I love human connection – seeing a moment happen for just a second and then it passes, but remains forever in an image. I think there’s an immense sense of poetry in that. This image was created with a fish-eye and a telephoto lens. I envisioned combining two shots when I saw this beautiful cove lit with the mesmerizing colors of a Maui sunset. I took the first shot with a fisheye on a tripod with the shutter slowed down to a ½ second exposure. This technique created a dreamy atmosphere with the soft silky motion blur on the ocean waves. As I captured this image, I imagined the couple being out on the rocks having a gentle kiss. I then shot a silhouetted telephoto shot of the two of them kissing at sunset. Later at my studio, I digitally combined these two images to make an incredibly surreal image.

What would you say is your “signature style?”
Candid moments caught with an artistic eye

Who or what inspires your work?
There is that one split second that captures “the moment” that tells the story. Henri Bresson-Cartier, the father of photojournalism, called it “the decisive moment”. This Frenchman was a great inspiration for me to devote my life to capturing these precious moments. But my greatest inspiration is the love my couples have for each other. Bringing their story alive in pictures and recording it for eternity is the greatest pleasure in my life’s work.

Do you have a favorite place or time you like to shoot?
Makena Cove at sunset is paradise at its finest. Half of my portfolio has been captured there. I know practically every single angle after shooting over 1,000 weddings at this site.

What would you say has been the key to the success of your business?
I’m always trying to out-do myself — you’re only as good as your last shot. I put my clients’ needs first and always strive to over-deliver the goods, always keeping it fun for myself and the people I work with.

What lens do you use most and why do you love it?
I love the most basic lens, the 50mm with 1.4 aperture. It is razor sharp and the best in low light situations. This lens is perhaps the best for photojournalism, and at the same time creates artistic effects with its short depth of field and lovely bokeh (blurred backgrounds). I use all the lenses in my bag at every shoot — they each have their own purpose.

Tiffany and Ryan celebrated their love with family and friends at the Haiku Mill on Maui’s North Shore. Built in 1835, the Hawaiian historical landmark is set among the ruins of one of the very first sugar mills in Maui. This secret garden hideaway with its antique Parisian ambience exudes romance and tranquility and was the perfect Hawaii wedding venue for their intimate gathering.

These engagement photos of Adiel and Corey were shot at the ruins of the old Maui High School, Maui’s sugar cane fields and at the stunning stretch of beach at Ho’okipa.  This adorable couple began their love affair as coworkers, became friends and eventually fell in love. Adiel says Corey was her “rock” in establishing her business, the new and very popular Salon 253 in Wailuku town, of which she is a co-owner. She specializes in hair and makeup for weddings and loves talking with her brides about ideas for her own big day. Corey and Adiel are planning a wedding at a private estate on Maui’s North Shore. Congratulations!

What makes your photography different?

Everyone’s photography is different — or at least it should be, because we are all different. I love color (although I love black and white just as much), I love to be creative, and most of all, I love to have fun. I think my photography reflects this. Because I love color so much, I shoot film. I used to shoot digital but all the work I was drawn to ended up being shot on film. So I switched and I have never been happier.

The reason I shoot film is easy to answer: the colors. The look of film. The satisfaction I get from shooting film. The challenge and skill required to shoot film. Film is the reason I love photography. And the reason clients love my photographs.

Would you describe your photographs has having a special style?

If I had to name a style, I would say Fine Art. My images are definitely artistic and creative. And because my colors are true colors (i.e. blue skies not washed out yellow skies), my images will never become passé. After 50 years, the couples will still love their album and be able to relive their day.

Do you have any favorite places that you love to shoot?

I love just about anywhere in Hawaii, but somewhere new is always fun and exciting. I think you can compose a terrific photo shoot walking down the street or standing on a beach. It’s about seeing what is around you and being creative with what you find.

Who or what inspires your work?

My work is inspired by color, patterns, and composition. I love to look at both fashion and surf magazines for inspiration — sort of a surfer girl a la Vogue mentality.

Do you have a favorite moment when you shoot a wedding?

I’m not sure I have just one favorite moment. I really love the kiss and moments just after the ceremony when everyone is happy and a bit more relaxed. I especially love the time together with just the bride and groom.

Can you share a photo or two that reflects your work? What’s the story behind these photos?

These photos show my style. Lots of color, a bit of quirkiness, and everyone having a really fun time. I love having some time to do creative posing with the bride and groom. The one shot with the very saturated color was shot on my holga. I like to incorporate a bit of toy camera or Polaroid work into all of my shoots. I always bring my Polaroid to the wedding reception and give away the Polaroids. Everyone loves it and has a good time. I can make scans of the negatives I keep to include in the couple’s album.

What advice can you give couples when they are looking for a photographer for their wedding day?

My best advice is to look at the several portfolios and pick the one photographer whose images make you happy or touch you in some way. It’s a bit like picking a best friend for a day.

My children, rainbows, film, creating, popsicles, stripes, smiles, the ocean and cherries.
